Environmentally Conscious

Trop Brasil is a company in tune with 21st century values and challenges. The company has a long-term vision and its commitments comprise the respect for the environment, welfare of its employees and workers and balanced relationships with suppliers and customers.

An initiative that illustrates Trop Brasil’s values is the Healthy Fruit Project, which seeks to communicate knowledge and technology to its suppliers, the farmers. The goal is the production of healthy fruits, according to strict pesticide control and proper productivity rates. In addition to contributing to the production of higher quality produce, the project improves working conditions and helps train hundreds of fruit growers that sell fruit to the company.

However, respecting suppliers, customers and consumers is not the only proof that sustainability is Trop Brasil’s top priority. The company also contributes to protecting the environment through various other initiatives:

• Reasonable use of water;
• Use of less polluting energy sources;
• Selective waste;
• Appropriate treatment of effluents;
• Reuse of fruit residues for organic fertilizer production, among others.

Water

Good quality water is used in Trop’s productive process. The water is used only to wash the fruits with defined consumption goals, ensuring the rational use of the water, which is greatly reused.

The water resulting from the washing of the fruits is rich in organic material. The liquid is routed to an internal treatment pool and, subsequently used as fert-irrigation in a 40 thousand m² area, where coconut and rice are cultivated. The purpose is to use the water and avoid it being thrown in rivers. Besides, the organic material has an important use enriching the soil.

In strict compliance with environment legislation, sanitary and industrial residues do not mix.

Destination of fruit residues

After the production of the pulp, organic residues are stored in proper recipients and, then, delivered to accredited companies for the manufacture of fertilizers. Part of this material is resold to cooperatives and rural producers that supply Trop, to guarantee the cycle sustainability.

Boiler

It is supplied only with wood approved by the Instituto de Defesa Agropecuária e Florestal (Idaf) of the Espírito Santo State and deriving from reforested areas. The wood-fired boiler emits less toxic gases and, therefore, is less pollutant than the oil-fired boiler.

Selective collection

After being separated, all garbage collected is store in a proper shed until its final destination to companies accredited by the Instituto Estadual de Meio Ambiente (IEMA). Trop provides government bodies with information on collection on a quarterly basis.
